Working in a Saint Lucia hotel: pay, permits and hiring season

Last checked

Pay and the minimum wage

Saint Lucia's first national minimum wage came into force on 1 October 2024: EC$ 6.52 an hour, or EC$ 1,131 a month. It does not count overtime or your share of service charge (Saint Lucia Gazette, 30 September 2024). Hotel pay is usually in Eastern Caribbean dollars (EC$ 2.70 to US$ 1), weekly or every two weeks.

Many hotels add a service charge to guests' bills. Under the Labour Act it must be shared in a way agreed between the employer and staff or set by a union agreement, and the Labour Commissioner can ask to see how it was shared. Our guide to service charge, tips and staff housing has the details. Every job here shows the base pay and says when service charge comes on top.

When hotels hire

The busy season runs from mid-December to April. Many hotels recruit in September, October and November so new staff are trained in time. The hurricane season runs from June to November, and some smaller hotels and restaurants close for a short break in September or October.

Work permits

If you are not a Saint Lucian you need a work permit or an exemption from the Department of Labour before you start, and employers can be fined for hiring without one (Government of Saint Lucia). Citizens of other OECS countries can usually work without a permit under OECS free movement; CARICOM nationals with a skills certificate are also covered. See our work permit guide.

Getting to work

Most hotels are in the north, around Rodney Bay, Gros Islet and Cap Estate, with others at Marigot Bay, on the south-west coast near the Pitons and around Vieux Fort in the south. The drive from the north to the Pitons takes well over an hour on winding roads, so if you live far away, ask whether the hotel provides staff transport or housing.

How to apply

Apply on the job page in about a minute. Real employers never ask for money for a job, a uniform, training or a permit; if anyone does, report it.
