Working in a Jamaican hotel: pay, permits and hiring season
Last checked
Pay and the minimum wage
Jamaica's national minimum wage is J$ 17,000 for a 40-hour week (J$ 425 an hour) from 1 July 2026, up from J$ 16,000 (Jamaica Information Service). Most hotel jobs are paid in Jamaican dollars, weekly or every two weeks. Supervisors, chefs and managers earn well above the minimum, and some senior roles are quoted in US dollars.
Every job on this site shows the pay the employer offers. Before you accept, ask whether the job also includes a share of service charge or gratuities, meals on duty and transport. Our guide to service charge, tips and staff housing explains what to ask.
When resorts hire
The busy season runs from mid-December to April, when most winter visitors arrive. Many resorts add staff in the autumn so new people are trained before then. The hurricane season runs from June to November, and some smaller hotels cut hours or close for a few weeks in September or October. Large all-inclusives hire all year round.
Hiring news: Iberostar said in August 2026 that reopening its Rose Hall resort as JOIA Rose Hall would create about 400 jobs by the end of 2026 (Jamaica Gleaner).
Work permits
If you are not Jamaican you need a work permit, unless you are married to a Jamaican or covered by Jamaica's CARICOM skilled persons rules. The employer applies to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and has to show it tried to hire a Jamaican first. The processing fee is J$ 17,250 per application, and you must not start work until the permit is approved. Details are in our work permit guide.
Getting to work
Most resort jobs are on the north and west coasts, from Negril to Ocho Rios, often some distance from town. Shifts start early and finish late, so ask whether the hotel runs a staff bus or pays a transport allowance before you accept a job far from home.
How to apply
Apply on the job page: it takes about a minute, and you can attach your CV or build one here. Real employers never ask you to pay for a job, a uniform, training or a permit. If anyone does, report the job.
