Working in a Dominican Republic hotel: pay, the legal tip and hiring season

Last checked

Pay and the minimum wage

The Dominican Republic sets a separate minimum wage for hotels, casinos and restaurants. From 1 June 2026 it is RD$ 21,840 a month at hotels and casinos with more than 150 workers, and RD$ 18,409.30 at smaller ones. For restaurants and bars it is RD$ 21,000 or RD$ 17,701.25 (Resolution CNS-04-2025, summarised by EY).

On top of salary, hotels, restaurants and bars add a 10% "propina legal" (legal tip) to guests' bills. By law it is shared among the staff who serve guests and does not count as part of your salary (Labour Code, Articles 197 and 228 to 230). Ask how much it usually comes to each month when you compare offers. Our service charge guide has more.

Languages

Spanish is the language of work. English is needed for most jobs that deal with guests, and French, German, Italian or Russian help in guest relations and animation teams. Jobs on this site that need Spanish but not English are shown in Spanish.

Foreign workers

Most hotel staff are Dominican: the hotel association Asonahores says more than 90% of hotel workers are (Dominican Today, August 2026). The Labour Code requires at least 80% of a company's workers to be Dominican, with exceptions for managerial and technical roles, so most jobs for foreigners are in management, specialist kitchens, spa, animation and sales. See our work permit guide.

When resorts hire

Punta Cana's all-inclusives are busy most of the year, with the peak from mid-December to April. Large resorts recruit all year, sometimes through job fairs and open hiring days. The hurricane season runs from June to November.

Getting to work

Many resorts in Bávaro, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto run staff buses from Higüey, Verón and other towns. Ask about the route and shift times before you accept.
