Working in a Barbados hotel: pay, permits and hiring season

Last checked

Pay and the minimum wage

Barbados has a national minimum wage that is reviewed regularly. WageIndicator reports it as BBD$ 10.71 an hour from January 2026 (WageIndicator); check the current rate with the Labour Department. The Barbados dollar is pegged at BBD$ 2 to US$ 1.

Service charge is common in Barbados hotels and restaurants. There is no law that says how it must be shared; in many hotels it is set by union agreements, so ask how it works before you accept. More in our service charge guide.

When hotels hire

The busy season runs from mid-December to April, and many hotels recruit in the autumn. Summer brings Crop Over, the island's biggest festival, which keeps restaurants and bars busy in July and early August. The hurricane season runs from June to November.

Work permits

If you are not Barbadian, the employer (your sponsor) applies for a work permit. Short-term permits last up to 11 months and long-term permits up to three years; for a long-term permit the employer must show no suitable Barbadian is available (Barbados Immigration Department). Barbados is one of the CARICOM countries with full free movement for CARICOM nationals, so check our CARICOM free movement guide first. More in our work permit guide.

Getting to work

Most hotels are on the west coast (Holetown, Speightstown) and the south coast (Hastings to Oistins). Buses and route taxis serve both coasts, but late shifts can end after the last bus, so ask about transport home.

How to apply

Apply on the job page in about a minute. Real employers never ask you to pay for a job, a uniform, training or a permit.
