Working in a Cayman Islands hotel: pay, permits and hiring season
Last checked
Pay and the minimum wage
The Cayman Islands' minimum wage rose to CI$ 8.75 an hour on 1 January 2026, from CI$ 6. For tipped staff covered by a gratuity scheme approved by the Department of Labour and Pensions, the minimum is CI$ 6.56 an hour (Government of the Cayman Islands). The Cayman dollar is worth US$ 1.20.
Businesses must register with the Director of Labour and Pensions before collecting gratuities, and the money goes to service staff, not managers. Our service charge guide explains how it is shared. Living costs on Grand Cayman are among the highest in the Caribbean, so compare offers on pay, housing and transport together.
When hotels hire
Winter, from mid-December to April, is the busiest time. Many resorts on Seven Mile Beach recruit from late summer so staff are in place before then. The hurricane season runs from June to November.
Work permits
Most hotel workers from abroad need a work permit, applied for by the employer through WORC (Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman). From 1 May 2026 employers must advertise a job for 21 days on the WORC portal and in a local newspaper before applying, fees depend on the job's tier, and there are new limits on changing employer in the first two years (Conyers, 2026). The maximum time on work permits is still nine years. CARICOM skills certificates do not give a right to work in Cayman. See our work permit guide.
How to apply
Apply on the job page in about a minute. Never pay anyone for a job offer or a work permit: in Cayman the employer applies and pays the permit fee.
Working in Cayman Islands: common questions
- What are the main hotel areas in the Cayman Islands?
- Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman has most of the large hotels. George Town, West Bay and East End have more, and Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have small dive resorts.
- Are there dive jobs in the Cayman Islands?
- Yes. Diving is a big part of tourism on all three islands. Dive shops and resorts hire instructors, divemasters and boat crew, and they usually want a recognised dive qualification.
