Working in a Bahamas hotel: pay, permits and hiring season

Last checked

Pay and the minimum wage

The private-sector minimum wage in The Bahamas has been B$ 260 a week (B$ 6.50 an hour) since January 2023 (CBC, January 2023). Check the current rate with the Department of Labour before you rely on it. The Bahamian dollar is pegged one-to-one to the US dollar, and both are used everywhere.

Pay for hotel jobs depends a lot on the role and the resort. Many front-of-house jobs at the big Nassau and Paradise Island resorts include gratuities or service charge, so ask how they are shared. Every job on this site shows the employer's own pay figure.

When resorts hire

Winter, from mid-December to April, is the busiest time, with spring break in March and April. The hurricane season runs from June to November. The big resorts on New Providence hire all year; smaller Out Island resorts often hire for the season and may close for part of the autumn.

Work permits

You need a work permit unless you are Bahamian or a permanent resident. For most jobs the employer must first get a Labour Certificate, which means advertising the job in a national newspaper for three days in a row and filing a notice of vacancy with the Department of Labour (Government of The Bahamas). CARICOM skills certificates do not give a right to work in The Bahamas. More in our work permit guide.

Living and getting to work

On New Providence most staff live in Nassau and travel by jitney (bus) or car. Out Island resorts are remote, so many of them help with staff housing or transport. If a job offers housing, ask what it costs, who you share with and what happens to it if the job ends.

How to apply

Apply on the job page in about a minute, with your CV or a profile built here. Never pay anyone for a job, a uniform, training or a permit. That is the clearest sign of a scam.
